MFL

Learning a foreign language provides an important window to the world. At Henry Chichele (HC), our MFL curriculum seeks to spark pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of language and cultures. The curriculum will encourage pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing. It will also provide opportunities for them to communicate for practical purposes, learn new ways of thinking and simply enjoy the process of language learning through engaging, practical lessons.
At Henry Chichele Primary School we have opted to study two languages; Spanish in Year 3 and 4 and French in Year 5 and 6. We feel that this will give our students a good insight into both languages, and will encourage the skills of language learning to prepare students for the future.

Assessment in MFF

Pupils are regularly assessed in MFL to ensure they are making progress with their learning. This assessment informs future teaching and ensures that pupils have a solid foundation of understanding (key vocabulary and grammar) before moving on to the next unit. Pupils are assessed by means of ongoing teacher assessment in each lesson, to ensure that the key vocabulary is being retained and that the key skills are developing.

At the end of a unit each term, pupils will complete an assessment including each of the 4 skills - Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. Please see examples from Year 3 and 6 below.
This should give an accurate picture of their understanding of a particular unit and also identify areas of strength and anything that may need to be looked at again.
These assessments will form the basis of the levels awarded at the end of each year for reports as we build up a picture of how the pupils are progressing.
If you have any further questions about assessment in MFL, please feel free to contact Miss Cave, the MFL lead.
